Distributed Work is not the same as Remote

Remote work is definitely not the same as distributed work. That is it and finish!!. Let me not be a tyrant and share more about my thoughts. (Although the home offices probably look the same).

Remote work simply is working from home on a scheduled time that matches your colleagues’. The expectation is that everyone is online or working at the same time. Now distributed work doesn’t have this expectation. In fact most distributed work is asynchronous and folks work at very different times. In my experience, there is no fixed expectation that you should be online at a specific time always.

The true test of distributed work is when you have an emergency. This will show you clearly if your company is distributed or remote work based. In my personal opinion because of the nature of distributed work, at almost any point in time there is someone working and online to assist with anything. I will go even further to say, that even during weekends it is the same. For distributed to work effectively, asynchronous communication needs to be at the centre of everything. As someone who has worked remotely and distributed I can attest to this.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope you enjoy whatever form of work you do!!!
